OBITUARY
An old identity of Moonta and district, Mr. William Wilton, died on June
11, at the age of 77 years. Born in Cornwall, he came to Australia with
his parents (the Late Mr. and Mrs. James Wilton) in the ship Gilmore.
They went to Moonta in 1862 (before the town was incorporated), Mrs.
Wilton (the mother) being the first white woman to come to Moonta Mines.
His father conducted a business on the mineral lease, and later built a
store in the town. The deceased met with an accident many years ago,
when one of his mother’s shops in George-street was being renovated,
which cost him a leg. He never married, and after the death of his
mother he resided with his sister (the late Mrs. J. Reed) and since then
with Mr. Reed. A sister (Mrs. E. Wheare) resides at Kensington,
Victoria. Mesdames A. E. Trezise of Albany, Western Australia, and C. T.
Bowey, Adelaide, are nieces, and Messrs. Vic Reed and Ken Reed, Moonta,
are nephews.
