VETERAN PROSPECTOR PASSES
Early Coolgardie Rushes Recalled
The death is announced at Kalgoorlie, at the age of 80, of Mr. John
Trenbath, better known as “Overland Jack,” who had been identified with
the eastern goldfields since the days of the early rushes to White
Feather (Kanowna) and I.O.U. (Bulong). He was one of the prospectors of
the Oversight at Bulong, and made a lot of money out of it. He was later
associated with the Queen Margaret. A notable bushman and as hard as
nails, he overlanded from Kadina (S.A.) to Coolgardie with a team of
horses over 30 years ago, when many predicted he would never negotiate
the then trackless desert. The late Mr. Trenbath, who migrated to South
Australia from Cornwall at the age of 21, was twice married, and is
survived by a widow and grown-up children.
