OBITUARY
MR. B. TRELOAR
With the death of Bennet Treloar Gympie has lost one of its dwindling
band of mining pioneers. He was born at Crowan, near Helston (Cornwall),
80 years ago, and came to Queensland on the sailing ship Caroline 20
years later. For three years he followed railway construction work and
tin mining in the Stanthorpe district before going to Gympie, where he
resided for a period of 57 years. During that time he managed several
prominent mines, including The Caledonian, Jones’s Caledonian, 7 and 3
Monkland, and Monkland and Inglewood. He was active until within a few
days of his death, and was ever ready to help prospectors, both
practically and with his experienced advice. Mr. Treloar was one of the
first initiates of Lodge Braemar and a foundation member of Court
Foresters’ Home. He is survived by five sons (Bennet, James, Arthur,
Henry, and Thomas) and two daughters (Mrs. Hamilton Nelson and Miss
Ellen Treloar.)
