Thursday 24 June 1920 The death of Dr. Philip Thornton, formerly superintendent of the Ipswich General Hospital, took place yesterday at his residence, Warwick-road, Ipswich. About a week ago he contracted a severe cold, and this was followed by influenza. The late Dr. Thornton was born in Cornwall in 1846, and took his degrees in the Old Country. He became medical superintendent of the Ipswich General Hospital in 1887, and held the position until 1915, when he resigned. In the following year he was appointed to the charge of the epidemic hospital attached to the institution, and held that appointment up to the time of his death. He is survived by his widow and four daughters—Mrs. McKenzie (wife of the manager of the Bank of Australasia at Cooyar), Mrs. Elliott (wife of the Rev. J. Elliott, Allora), Mrs. Clarke Foote (of Rockton, Fassifern line), and Mrs. Bowden Foote (Ipswich). Contributed by Bob Bolitho |
