GEORGE THOMAS
It is with regret that we have to record the passing away of another old resident of Marlborough in the person of the late Mr George Thomas, who died at Grovetown on the 5th inst. at the ripe age of 81 years. Mr Thomas was a native of Cornwall, where he was engaged in mining, having occupied the position of captain of the “Wheal Kitty Mine” for some years in succession to his father. He arrived in Nelson November ’63 by the ship “Magna Bona,” and in March ’64 he removed to Marlborough, and resided at Grovetown till his decease. The deceased gentleman was a prominent supporter of the Grovetown Sunday School, in the progress of which he took great interest. The deceased is survived by three sons and three daughters—Mr W. Thomas, Golden Bay; Messrs William and J. H. Thomas, of Grovetown; Mrs Thos. Taylor, Masterton; Mrs C. Williams, Auckland; Mrs T. Croudis, Wellington—and twenty-three grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
