Mr W. J. STEPHENS
The death occurred in a private hospital at Bendigo yesterday, after a
long illness of Mr William John Stephens, former managing director and
editor of the Bendigo Advertiser, in his 70th year. Mr Stephens was born
in Cornwall, England, and came to Victoria as a child. He began work in
the mines when 12, but by attending night classes at Bendigo School of
Mines was later able to qualify as an accountant, attaining the highest
degrees, including the ACA (Aust). He became secretary of the Bendigo
Advertiser about 20 years ago, and from 1930 until a few months ago was
managing director and editor of the paper. He leaves a widow and 4
children.
