Obituary Thomas Stephens
The late Mr Thomas Stephens - Another of the pioneers of Strathalbyn, Mr
Thomas Stephens, has joined "the great majority", his death taking place
at his residence, Park street, Hyde Park, on Monday last. Mr Stephens
settled in Strathalbyn in the early days, and built the fine store and
residence in High street now occupied by Mr A. Phillips, where he
conducted business as a general storekeeper for many years with success,
establishing branches at Mannarie and at Appila-Yarcowie. He left
Strathalbyn but returned to it on several occasions, but finally took up
his residence permanently in the city a few years ago. While in
Strathalbyn Mr Stephens took an active part in most matters affecting
its welfare, the Methodist Church in particular having in him a zealous
supporter. He held place on most of the public institutions and in very
many ways aided in developing the prosperity of the town. His remains
were brought to Strathalbyn on Tuesday, and interred in the local
cemetery, the Rev. J. H. Trevorrow and E. Gratton conducting the service
at the grave.
(Transcriber's Note: Thomas Stephens was baptised at Helston on the
29 September 1835.)
