Obituary John Tresidder Stephens
During the week that has passed, the remorseless hand of death has removed an old and respected resident from our midst. We allude to Mr John Stephens, whose demise is noted elsewhere. Mr Stephens (who was father of Messrs William & Thomas Stephens of our town) had been a resident in this neighbourhood for nearly 20 years, and during the early days of this settlement, did a flourishing business as a butcher. Some ten years ago, having by close application and shrewd business habits obtained a comfortable competence, he retired from active life. Since that period his health was good, when his advanced age is taken into consideration, until a few days before his death, when he sank very rapidly and died about mid-day on Friday. Although he may rightly be considered to have lived to a ripe old age, it is but another warning to remind us.
"The battle of our life is brief.
The alarm - the struggle - the relief -
Then sleep we side by side."
Mr Stephens remains were interred in the Strathalbyn Cemetery on Saturday afternoon, when a large concourse of persons assembled to pay their last tribute of respect to his memory. The Rev. J. Y. Simpson officiated at the grave.
