OBITUARIES
We regret to record the death of Mr. Sloggatt, father of Mrs. J. E.
Elliot, of Spring Creek, which occurred on Monday morning last. The
deceased was born at Valency, Cornwall, and was at an early age adopted
by his Grandfather as his heir to his estates. Coming to Australia in
1851 he for a while engaged in mining pursuits, but not caring for the
life was offered and accepted the position of secretary to the Chief of
Police. Soon afterwards he commenced business in Melbourne as a wine and
spirit merchant in partnership with Mr. Dingle, now Mayor of Worcester,
and was also interested in the Indian horse shipping trade. Retiring
from business he lived on his property, at Malvern, amusing himself at
his favourite hobby—painting.
Three years ago while on a visit to his daughter, at Spring Creek, his
wife, who accompanied him, died suddenly, and from that time until his
death he lived a peaceful life, "far from the busy haunts of men." For
him the City had no attraction, but the bush was full of interest.
"The hush of the breathless morning
On the thin tin crackling roofs;
The hazy black burnt ranges,
The dust of our shoeless hoofs."
Were to him an unspeakable and constant pleasure. Each tree and flower,
hill and dale, everything in nature excited his interest and admiration,
so much so that he was wont to say the days were not long enough to
admire the wonderful works of the Almighty. His common sense, and
practical method of solving problems, made him a most interesting
companion to all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance and
friendship, and he departs this life with the love and veneration of all
who knew him.
