OBITUARY
The Rev. John Seccombe
The death occurred yesterday of the Rev. John Seccombe, of Malvern, at
the age of 94 years. Born in Cornwall, Mr. Seccombe went as a young man
to the Bendigo goldfields, but very shortly afterward he entered the
Methodist ministry. He was stationed first in the Beechworth district in
the days when bushrangers roamed the countryside, and later he went to
Buffalo, where he was one of the first to minister to the needs of
outlying settlers. Charges at Talbot and Clunes followed, then terms in
the Merino district, Blackwood, near Kyneton, Heathcote, Avoca,
Scarsdale-Linton, and Raywood. In Tasmania Mr. Seccombe was stationed
first at Deloraine, and then at Devonport—his last charge, which he
relinquished upon his retirement about 30 years ago. Mr. Seccombe was a
widower. Seven sons survive him. His eldest grandson, Mr. Howard G.
Seccombe, who is now at Oxford University, was Victorian Rhodes Scholar
for 1930. The funeral will leave the chapel of Messrs. Le Pine and Sons,
Camberwell, this afternoon, at 3.30 p.m., for the Burwood Cemetery.
