The Weekly Phoenix Herald,
23 June 1898 A telegram was received here on Monday morning announcing the death of Samuel Morton last Sunday at 11 o’clock a. m., at St. Luke’s hospital, San Francisco. The news was a severe shock to the wife and friends of the deceased. He left Globe May 22d for Klondike, apparently in good health. Mr. Morton was taken sick soon after his arrival in San Francisco but letters received in the interim indicated that he was improving and that his condition was not serious. It has been revealed since that Mr. Morton was subject to heart disease and it was this that cut short the thread of life. Samuel Morton was a native of Cornwall, England. He had been a resident of Globe about sixteen years, having followed mining all the time, and bore an excellent reputation as a citizen.—Silver Belt. Contributed by Bob Bolitho |
