Atherton Notes
I am sorry to have to announce another death amongst our farmers—this
time that of John Lightfoot, aged 38 last May. Poor Lightfoot died on
Sunday afternoon at McCraw’s Hotel of heart disease from which he had
suffered a long time. He was attended during the last week of his
illness, when it was apparent that the end was drawing near, by Mrs John
Nairne who was as attentive and kind to the poor sufferer as a mother or
sister could be, also by all the members of the house both male and
female. The funeral was largely attended and Mr Mark Brazier had the
burial in hand and everything appertaining thereto was well carried out.
Monumental inscription at Atherton Pioneer Cemetery:
In loving memory of John Turner Lightfoot born at Bodmin, Cornwall,
England, died at Atherton Octr 14th 1900, aged 33 years. Not my will but
Thine be done.
