JOHNS.—Mr. Thomas Johns, of Holdsworth Road, Long Gully, who died on Friday and whose funeral took place yesterday to Bendigo Cemetery, held something of a record for a working miner. He retired in 1945 at the age of 80 after 61 years as a miner. He came to Australia when 18, and like many other Cornishmen began mining at Wallaroo copper mines. He then came to Bendigo and started work in the Lady Barkly mine. Subsequently he worked in the Lansell's 180, in various mines at Burnie, Dundee, Charters Towers, Norseman, deep alluvial mines at Dunolly and Tarnagulla, and then the Virginia, Carlisle, South New Moon and North Deborah mines on this field. For a time he was manager at the East Clarence. He was a skilled shaftman. Mr. Johns is survived by his wife (Mrs. Annie Caroline Johns), four sons—Raymond, Norman, Stanley and Sydney—and five daughters—Rose (Mrs. G. Wade), Edith (Mrs. T. Rogers), Lillian (Mrs. S. Jackson), Violet (Mrs. G. Rose) and Daisy (Mrs. Bartlett). At the funeral yesterday the Rev. C. Whitehead officiated.
