OBITUARY
The death of Mr. John Jewell occurred at his residence, Chyverloe,
Gympie, on Tuesday afternoon, at the age of 83 years, after a short
illness. The late Mr. Jewell, who was born in February, 1843, at
Chyverloe, Cornwall, England, came to Australia in the sailing ship New
True Britain, arriving at Melbourne in the year 1863. He was engaged on
the Ballarat field in its palmy days, and on the discovery of Gympie,
journeyed to the new field, arriving there a few weeks after Gympie’s
discovery. The deceased was one of the city’s most respected and
prominent mine managers; his most successful enterprise being the South
Glanmire and Monkland Syndicate, of which he was in charge for over 25
years, during which period it proved to be one of Gympie’s richest
mines. The late Mr. Jewell was very keenly interested in horticulture,
and was, for many years, an active supporter of the Gympie Agricultural
and Mining Society. He was a life member of the Loyal True Friendship
Lodge, and also one of the foundation members of Lodge Braemar
(Masonic). He was treasurer of the latter lodge for 23 years,
relinquishing the position when he retired from lodge activities. He is
survived by his widow and two sons, Messrs. Thomas Jewell (Brisbane) and
William Jewell (Gympie).
