OBITUARY
MR. RICHARD HELLYAR
ALSTONVILLE, Monday.
Mr. Richard Hellyar died at his residence at Pearce’s Creek, near
Alstonville, yesterday morning. The funeral took place this morning, and
was largely attended by residents of the whole North Coast. Deceased,
who was a native of Cornwall, England, was 55 years of age. He came to
Australia about 35 years ago, and engaged in cane farming at Piclico,
near Ballina. About 31 years ago he settled in Alstonville, where he was
engaged in dairying. He was actively associated with co-operative
movements in the pioneering days of the dairying industry, being
provisional director of the Alstonville Dairy Company. He acted as a
director for several years, but retired from the board 12 months ago. He
took an active part in agricultural pursuits, and was closely associated
with the Alstonville Agricultural Society as a committeeman for 30
years, and chief steward in the pavilion exhibits. He was a prominent
purebred Guernsey breeder. His exhibits gaining many prizes at district
shows. He was also a keen judge of Berkshire pigs, having one of the
finest stud farms on the North Coast.
The services at the funeral were conducted by Rev. E. T. Chapman,
Methodist. Deceased, who was a member of the Lodge Alstonville, was
accorded a Masonic funeral. Bro. J. T. Whipps read the Masonic service.
