The Capricornia,
Saturday 28 September 1889 On Monday morning, the 16th instant, at about six
o’clock, the body of Quartermaster Hawkins, H.M.’s s.s. Raven, was found
in the Endeavour River, Cooktown, at No. 2 wharf, his arms firmly
clasped round a cross pile, but his head immersed in the water. Life had
been extinct for several hours, but no noise or call for help is
ascertained to have been heard. Deceased was thirty-six years of age,
and a native of Cornwall, England. He had been out enjoying the holiday,
and is supposed to have tripped from the wharf while hailing a boat to
get on board. |
