Memoirs
John W. Harvey was born in Cornwall, England, July 4, 1815, and died at his home at Indian Orchard, Wayne county, Pa., Dec. 20, 1900. He came to this country when quite a young man. Was married July 15, 1839. His wife died May 26, 1861, leaving three daughters and three sons. Three daughters and one son survive him. One son died April 2, 1870, the other died Dec. 1, 1880, leaving four small children, which were well taken care of by the departed grandfather. The greater part of life was spent at Indian Orchard and Cherry Ridge. He thrashed buckwheat shortly after coming to this country on the present site of the beautiful village of Honesdale which was then a swamp. He was put to work when quite a small boy and his early education was greatly neglected, but he did the very best he could with the opportunity given him and by perseverance was able to educate himself. He was a horde working man and did much for his children and grandchildren. He was a steward on the Beach Lake circuit in 1865, and was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for over forty years. He loved to read the Word of God and spent many hours reading and meditating upon the good Book. Just a few weeks before he died he came to the school house, where services are held every Sunday afternoon, and said that he felt very feeble and regretted that he could not meet oftener, but was ready whenever the Lord saw fit to call him. His funeral was held from his late residence at Indian Orchard Saturday, Dec. 22, 1900, and was largely attended by friends and relatives and neighbors. His pastor conducted the services and took for his text the twenty-third Psalm and fourth verse. His remains were laid at rest in the Indian Orchard cemetery, a short distance from where he lived for so many years, and thus we pass over the river one by one.
