The Creswick Advertiser,
Tuesday 23 March 1897
(Creswick, Victoria)
Thomas B. Grose
It is with deep regret that we have to announce the death of Mr. Thomas
B. Grose, father of one of the proprietors of this journal, of Mr. W. B.
Grose M.L.A., of Mr. E. S. Grose, and other Sons (absent from Creswick
just now) but almost equally well known. The sad event occurred on
Saturday night, shortly before midnight, and it was of a very sudden
character. A few weeks ago the deceased gentleman had an attack of
illness, but not so serious as to excite the apprehension of his family,
and he appeared to recover gradually, and during the last fortnight
seemed to enjoy very fair health.
During his recent illness the deceased had been under medical treatment,
and the improvement of the few days before his death seems to have been
just the last flickering rally that so often precedes the end. The
deceased gentleman was one of the oldest, best known and respected of
the old pioneers whose ranks have been so thinned of late. It is seen
that most of these pioneers have passed the allotted span of life. The
deceased was one of the pioneers of Creswick, having been one of the
early settlers here. He and his family have grown with the town, and
have been most importantly identified with its interests through nearly
the whole course of its history. The deceased gentleman was a native of
Truro, Cornwall, and when a young man came to Australia for the purpose
of pushing his fortunes in this new land. He arrived in 1847, and landed
in Adelaide. He first proceeded to the famous Burra Burra copper mines,
and after remaining there for some time decided to come to Victoria, the
rich goldfields which were then exciting a great deal of attention. He
was in Ballarat at the time of the Eureka riots, and subsequently came
to Creswick, settling down near the spot where he has since resided. The
deceased was married in Truro, and a family of six sons was born to
them. While the sons by force of industry and character have taken
leading and honourable positions in society, the parents have always
lived quiet and unassuming lives. The deceased had a large circle of
friends in the borough of Creswick and was held in high esteem until his
death. At the time of his death he was in his 72nd year.
The funeral will take place this afternoon at 4.30 o'clock, and will
move from the late residence of the deceased, at North Parade, to the
Creswick Cemetery.
Webmaster's Note: Thomas Bolitho GROSE was the son of Edward & Grace
and was baptised in Kenwyn on 4 Sep 1825.
