The Brisbane Courier,
Friday 26 April 1907 Mr. Joseph Broad, one of the oldest and most respected residents of the Goodna district, died on 22nd instant, aged 71 years. He leaves a widow and one son. The deceased, who was born in Cornwall, came to the colonies in the early days, and by industry and thrift had accumulated sufficient to live a retired life. Nevertheless, he took a keen interest in all social matters, and held several prominent positions, all of which he filled with credit. He was ever ready with kindly advice and help to those who needed it, and in this capacity he he will be sorely missed. The funeral was the largest which has taken place in the district. The hearse was preceded by a strong body of Oddfellows, of which society Mr. Broad was a prominent officer. The remains, which were encased in a handsome cedar coffin, were borne to the grave by Messrs. Pitt, Thornton, Richardson and W. Daye. The chief mourners were the deceased’s only son, Mr. Ira C. Broad, and Miss M. J. Broad, his niece. An impressive service at the graveside was conducted by the Revs. Aitkens and Harriss, and Bro. H. Richardson read the Oddfellows’ service. Numerous letters and telegrams of condolence were received by the widow and her son. Many beautiful floral tributes were placed on the coffin. Contributed by Bob Bolitho |
