DEATH OF MR. W. BOLITHO

WELL-KNOWN MINE MANAGER

One of Bendigo's well-known mine managers, in the person of Mr. William Bolitho, expired at his residence, 167 Gladstone-street, Quarry Hill, yesterday afternoon. The deceased gentleman, who was 60 years of age, had been ailing for about 12 months. He contracted a severe cold on the night of the last Federal elections, and never properly recovered, the cause of his death being pulmonary tuberculosis. The late Mr. Bolitho was born at St. Just, Cornwall, and came to Australia when 17 years of age. He first settled in Ballarat, and did some alluvial and quartz mining. His stay in the sister goldfield was very brief, however, for in the year following his arrival from the home land, he was working in the mines in Bendigo. He had a varied experience in mining, and did much duty as shift boss before he was appointed manager of the Great Southern Mine in 1893. This position he occupied until the mine closed down about two years ago. At intervals the mine enjoyed a prosperous career during Mr. Bolitho's term of management. For a great number of years the deceased gentleman was a member of the Bendigo Mine Managers' Association. He took a lively interest in the People's Liberal Party, and was an ex-captain of the Long Gully Fire Brigade. He leaves a widow and 12 children to mourn their sad loss. The children (10 sons and two daughters) are all grown up, with the exception of two. The funeral will take place to-morrow at 4 p.m. to the Bendigo Cemetery.
