Wednesday 5 January 1938 Mother of a well-known local family and a widely
respected resident of Charters Towers for nearly fifty years, Mrs.
Alfred Bolitho, at the age of 69, passed away at the district hospital
on Monday evening. the ill-starred Quetta brought Mrs. Bolitho, then
Miss Harriet Hocking, with her sister, now Mrs. E. Wellington, of
Vulture Street, to Australia in 1890. The two sisters came out from
their home at Cambourne, Tuckingmill, Cornwall, England, to marry
childhood sweethearts who had some time earlier reached Australia and
were doing well at Ravenswood. After her marriage at Ravenswood, Mrs.
Bolitho spent a period of about six months with her husband at Katoomba,
New South Wales, but returned to Charters Towers, where during the
field's heyday Mr. Bolitho followed the occupation of mining, and was a
tributer in some of the best-known mines. They reared a family of five,
of whom four survive, Mildred (Mrs. Bolen, Giru), Alfred (Charters
Towers), Ella (Mrs. Forde, Gladstone), and Amy (Mrs. J. Reece, Cloncurry). The Northern Miner,
Monday 10 January 1938 Failing to withstand the strain of grief at the death of his wife fewer than six days ago superimposed on a weak state of health, Mr. Alfred Bolitho, a very old and respected resident of Charters Towers, passed away at the district hospital yesterday morning. In just under a week the grown-up family of four, including Mrs. Bolen (Giru), Alfred Bolitho (Charters Towers), Mrs. Forde (Gladstone) and Mrs. J. Reece (Cloncurry, have been robbed by the hand of death of their parents, and to them the deepest sympathy is extended. The late Mr. Bolitho came to Queensland from Cornwall, and had lived at Ravenswood and Charters Towers for 50 years. The Northern Miner,
