The Queenslander, Saturday 31 March 1923
(Brisbane, Queensland)

Mr. John Henry Beer, one of the oldest residents of Esk, died at that centre on March 20, at the age of 88 years. He was born at Wadebridge, Cornwall, in 1834, and came to Queensland when 23 years of age. In the first instance he tried gold mining, but had no luck, and two or three years later went to Cressbrook. Eventually he took up land at the Horse Mountain, or what is now known as Beer’s Creek. In 1884 he married Miss Emma Ackers, and removed to Esk, where he resided almost continuously up to the time of his death.
