WELL KNOWN RESIDENT DIED LAST NIGHT
William Armstrong, one of the oldest and best known residents of
Wilkes-Barre, died at 7:30 o’clock last evening of a complication of
diseases, aged 65 years. He has been a resident of this city for many
years and made many friends.
Mr. Armstrong was born at St. Austelle, Cornwall, England, on Feb. 1,
1838, and came to Wilkes-Barre on Jan. 1, 1865. He was inside foreman at
Baltimore No. 2 mine up to several years ago, when failing health
compelled him to relinquish the position.
Mr. Armstrong was first married to Mary Rowe, of Cornwall, England, on
Sept. 26, 1865. She died on Feb. 6, 1896. He was married the second time
to Elizabeth White on Oct. 20, 1897. His second wife and the following
children by the first marriage survive. W. H Armstrong, Mrs. Charles
Post, of Shickshinny, John J., and J. Fred Armstrong. He is also
survived by two sisters, Mrs. James Symons, of Wilkes-Barre, and Mrs.
Sarah Bray, of Australia.
Deceased was a member of the First M. E. church and of Garfield Lodge,
Sons of St. George. He was one of the best mining experts in this
section and was connected with the D. & H. for a long number of years.
He was held in esteem by all who knew him and they found him an example
of true manhood.
The funeral will take place from the family residence, 68 West Jackson
street, on Thursday afternoon at 2:30.
