OBITUARY
Mr Benjamin Angwin, an old colonist and very old resident of this City,
passed away yesterday at his son’s residence, Hawthorn, after a brief
illness, in his 87th year. Mr Angwin was born at St. Just, Cornwall, and
after his arrival in Ballarat in 1855 he opened a business as blacksmith
and engineer on the site near the present Coliseum. Subsequently he
worked at the Winter’s Freehold Co., J. and J. Smith’s, Creswick road,
and up to his retirement 28 years ago at the local railways locomotive
branch. The deceased had been closely identified with the Neil Street
Methodist Church from its commencement in 1861, and had held the
position of class leader for a period of 45 years. He was a member of
the church trust to the time of his death. Mr Angwin was honored by
being chosen to lay the foundation stone of the new church in 1891, and
was presented with a silver trowel on the occasion. He was for many
years superintendent and teacher of the Sunday school, in which he took
a great interest, and was held in high esteem for his faithfulness to
duty and his consistent Christian principles. The deceased gentleman
leaves a family of four sons, three daughters, several grandchildren,
and great-grandchildren. One of his grandsons, after serving in Egypt
and France, made the supreme sacrifice in May last. Mrs Angwin
predeceased her husband about 12 years ago. The funeral is appointed to
leave his son-in-law’s residence, Armstrong street north, at 3.30 p.m.
to-day, for the Neil Street Church, afterwards proceeding for interment
to the New Cemetery.
