OBITUARY
Mrs. E. L. ALEXANDER
The death occurred on Sunday morning last, at Elingamite, of Mrs Ema
Louisa Alexander, a very well known and highly respected resident of
Elingamite. Mrs Alexander left Cornwell at the early age of three years,
with her parents, Mr and Mrs Richard Matthews, who were early colonists,
and after a few years in the neighboring State of South Australia
settled in Coghill’s Creek district, near Ballarat, and saw the stirring
days and events of the period known as the Gold Digging Days. She
married Mr William Alexander, a native of Scotland and a resident of the
same district. About half a century ago the young settlers took up land
in the Elingamite district, where they prospered and reared a family of
nine—six boys and three girls—seven of which survive their parents. The
family at present living are Mr Wm Alexander, Elingamite; Mrs F. Curry,
Deniliquin (N.S.W.); Mr James Alexander, Omeo; Mr Richard Alexander,
South Purrumbete; Mrs E. Axford, Cobden; Mr P. Alexander, Elingamite;
and Mrs J. Blake, Cobden. The late Mrs Alexander was a prominent and
enthusiastic supporter of the Presbyterian church and attended the
Elingamite church while the services were held in the district. She was
a well-known supporter of all charitable objects, and was endeared to a
very large circle of friends for her many kind actions. The respect in
which she was held was testified to by the very large attendance at the
funeral at Cobden cemetery on Monday, the service of which was conducted
by the Rev. W. H. D. Meekin.
