South Petherwin Entry from the Post Office Directory of Cornwall 1856

SOUTH PETHERWIN situated 2 miles from Launceston, is a township, parish and village and includes the hamlet of TRECORGO; it is in the Launceston Union, and northern division of the Hundred of East. The church is an ancient stone building, with square tower and pinnacles and has 6 bells; it is in the perpendicular style of architecture, said to be dedicated to St Paternus. The living is a vicarage, united with that of Trewen in the gift of the University of Oxford and incumbency of the Rev. Henry Thomas May, M.A. ; the value is estimated at £250 per annum. There is a National school and places of worship for the Wesleyans, Bible Christians and Baptists. Trewarles and Botonnet pay tithes alternately to this parish and Lezant. The Inney Consols Mine, copper, lead and silver, has been at work two years down to 30 fathoms; lead and copper have been sold in small quantities and the lodes are improving. Trebursye is the seat of Charles Gurney, Esq. The area is
5,064 acres and the population in 1851 was 974.
