Examination of Joseph May, dated 16 May 1791
Cornwall to wit
The Examination of Joseph May, labourer, now residing in the Parish of
Sheviock in the said County, relative to his settlement, taken on Oath
before John Coryton Esq and Thomas Penwarne, Clerk, two of His Majesty’s
Justices of the Peace in and for the said County, the sixteenth day of
May 1791. Who on his Oath saith that he was born in the parish of
Boconnock in the County of Cornwall and lived with his parents, who were
legally settled there, till he was about thirteen years old, and was
then lawfully hired as a Covenant Servant for a year, to John Harris of
the Parish of Lanreath in the County aforesaid, Farmer, which service he
performed and received his full year’s wages. He then returned to
Boconnock aforesaid where he rented a cottage and kept a school for some
years; and then removed to the Parish of St Veep where he rented a
cottage & kept a school for about one year; and then removed to the
Parish of St Martyns (near Looe) in the County aforesaid where he rented
two rooms in which he lived about a year and a half, and paid one pound
six shillings a year for the said two rooms. He then removed to the
Parish of St Germans in the County aforesaid and rented a cottage in
which he lived about nine months, and was then married to Priscilla his
present wife and soon after rented another cottage in St Germans
aforesaid of forty shillings a year, in which he lived some years, and
kept an Alehouse. Soon after he was married his wife had a small
Leasehold Tenement fell to her by the death of a relation, in the Parish
of St Germans aforesaid, which this examinant afterwards let a the
yearly rent of two pounds and fifteen shillings, and continued to let it
at this rent for some years, and then sold it for ten pounds. During the
time he was in possession of this leasehold tenement, he rented a small
tenement in St Germans aforesaid, of the yearly rent of nine pounds and
three shillings, on which premises he lived about eighteen months. He
then rented a Cottage in the Borough of East Looe in the County
aforesaid, where he resided about five months and then returned to St
Germans aforesaid where he resided some years in different cottages.
Then removed to the Parish of Sheviock aforesaid where he rented a house
and garden of the yearly rent of two pounds and two shillings. But about
a week after he had entered on these premises, he purchased the
remainder of the …. of the said dwelling house (the garden was excepted)
for ten guineas and has continued in possession of the said dwelling
house ever since.
He saith there are now three lives on the said dwelling house.
