Believed to be the son of William & Lavinia Crook of Plymouth Devon who was born about 1891 (GRO record for birth not found).
 
1901 census aged 10 living with widowed mother & siblings at 21, Chudleigh Road, Plymouth.
 
1911 census aged 20 living with & working as an agricultural labourer for John & Martha STEER at Tor Farm, St Stephens by Saltash, Cornwall (birthplace given as Newton Abbott).
