Settlement Document for George Lucas
Examination of George Lucas – 7th September 1858
The Examination of George Lucas now and for some
time residing at Torquay in the County of Devon as to the place of his
last legal settlement, taken upon Oath this seventh day of September
1858 before us, two of Her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace acting in and
for the County of Cornwall
The said George Lucas saith: I am now 38 years of age, my parents names
were William and Elizabeth Lucas, as long ago as I can recollect I was
living with my parents in Workhouse Lane (at a place now called Pedlars
Mill) in the parish of Saint Austell in the County of Cornwall. The said
Pedlars Mill and the premises with the dwellinghouse thereunto attached
was at that time my Father’s Leasehold property. I continued to reside
in the said Parish of Saint Austell until I was 28 years of age. I
learnt the trade of a mason with my brother Robert Lucas but was not
bound to him as an Apprentice and I have continued to work for my
livelyhood as a mason ever since. I was married to my present wife Mary
Ann in the parish Church of the said parish of Saint Austell in the year
1848 her maiden name was Mary Ann Woon and I have by her five children
namely Mary Jane aged 10 years, William aged nine years, Robert aged
five years, Ellen aged three years and Hannah aged about one year and
nine months all born since my marriage as aforesaid. I never was an
Apprentice or a yearly servant and since my marriage I have never rented
any tenement for more than £2.15.0 per year and have done no other act
to gain a Settlement for myself. I continued to reside with my wife
abovenamed in the said parish of Saint Austell after my marriage until
the month of June 1848 when I took a Dwelling house at Parkwoon in the
parish of Roche in the said County and went there with my family to
reside and have continued to reside with my family in the said parish of
Roche ever since except when I have been away occasionally to work
sometimes for weeks and at other times for Months together but I still
during that time kept a dwelling house in the said parish of Roche and
my family have always resided there up to the present time.
