Know all Men
by these presents that we John Whitefield of the Borough
of Bodmin in the County of Cornwall Malster and William
Whitefield of the said Borough of Bodmin Shopkeeper are
held and firmly bound unto William Stevens and Charles
Treveale Churchwardens and William Thomas and William
Woone Overseers of the Poor of the parish of Roach in
the said County in One hundred pounds of Lawful Money of
Great Britain to be paid to the said William Stevens
Charles Treveale William Thomas and William Woone or
their certain Attorney their Executors Administrators
and Assigns To which payment well and truly to be made
We bind ourselves and each of is our and each of our
Heirs Executors and Administrators Jointly and severally
firmly by these presents Sealed with our Seals Dated the
Thirteenth Day of September in the Eighteenth Year of
the reign of our sovereign Lord George the Third by the
Grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland King
Defender of the Faith and so forth and in the year of
our Lord one thousand seven hundred and Seventy eight.
The Condition of this obligation is such That Whereas
Frances Williams of the said parish of Roach singlewoman
hath in and by her voluntary examination taken in
Writing and upon oath before Henry Hawkins Tremayne
Clerk one of his Majesty’s Justices of the Peace in and
for the said County of Cornwall declared that she is now
with Child and the said Child is likely to be born a
Bastard and to be Chargeable to the said parish of Roach
And that the above bounden John Whitefield is the Father
of the said Child If Therefore the said John Whitefield
and William Whitefield or either of them their or either
of their Heirs Executors or Administrators do and shall
from Time to Time and at all Times hereafter fully and
clearly Indemnify and are Harmless as well as the
abovenamed Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of
the said Parish of Roach and their Successors for the
Time being as also all and Singular the other
Parishioners and Inhabitants of the said Parish of Roach
which now are or hearafter shall be for the Time being
of and from all Manner of Costs Taxes Rates Assessments
and Charges whatsoever for or by reason of the Birth
Education and Maintenance of the said Child or Children
which the said Frances Williams is now big with and of
and from all Actions Suits Troubles and other Charges
and Demands whatsoever touching or concerning the same
Then this Present Obligation to be void otherwise to
remain in full force and virtue.
