Charles Arscott and Thomas James
To John Kessel and Willm Kessel the Overseers of Probus
Bond to Indemnify against Margaret May’s Bastard Child
 
Know all Men by this Instrument in Writing that We Charles Arscott of the parish of Merther in the County of Cornwall yeoman and Thomas James of Merther aforesaid yeoman are jointly and severally held and firmly bound unto John Kessel and William Kessel his Son Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Probus in the said County (in Trust for the Parishioners of the said Parish of Probus) in the Sum of One Hundred Pounds of good and lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid to the said John Kessel and William Kessel or their certain Attorney, Heirs, Executors, Administrators or Assigns, For which Payment to be well and truly made We bind ourselves and each of us our and each of our Heirs Executors and Administrators firmly by this Instrument Sealed with our Seals and Dated this Twenty Eighth Day of January In the fortyfirst Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord King George the third and in the Year of our Lord One thousand Eight hundred and One.
 
The Condition of this Obligation is such That Whereas Margaret May of the said Parish of Probus Singlewoman was on or about the Thirteenth day of this Instant January delivered of a Male Bastard Child within the said Parish of Probus and such Child is likely to become chargeable to the said Parish of Probus. And the above bounden Charles Arscott is the Father of the said Child. If therefore the said Charles Arscott and Thomas James or either of them their or either of their Heirs, Executors or Administrators some or One of them do and shall from Time to Time and at all Times hereafter fully and clearly indemnify and save harmless as well the abovenamed Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Probus and their Successors for the time being. And also all and singular the other Parish Officers, Parishioners and Inhabitants of the said parish of Probus which now are or hereafter shall be for the time being of and from all and all manner of Costs, Expences, Charges and Impositions whatsoever for or by Reason of the Birth, Education and Maintenance of the said Child so born a Bastard Child as aforesaid and of and from all Actions, Suits, Troubles and other Charges and Demands whatsoever touching or concerning the same, That then this present Obligation is to be void otherwise it is to remain in force
