Post Office Directory of Cornwall 1856 Printed and published by Kelly & Co., 19, 20 ,21 Old Bowsell Court. St Clements, Strand, London Poughill is a parish and small agricultural village in the Hundred and Union of Stratton, East Cornwall, and situated about 2 miles from that town. The church is a very ancient stone building, in the perpendicular style, with a handsome square tower surrounded by pinnacles. and has 5 bells; it is supposed to have been erected in the early part of the sixteenth century , as the registers go back as far as 1537 ; but all trace of it's dedication is lost, although by some ascribed to St Olave. the living is a vicarage, of the annual value of £125, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and incumbency of the Rev.John Davis M.A.who resides at Kilkhampton; the curate is the Rev. Henry Vyvyan Robinson B.A. A daughter of the famous Colonel Hacket is said to have been buried here. A house and lands were granted to the poor of this parish by Henry VIII. There is a National School for Girls. In 1851 the population was returned as 404. and the acreage of the parish as 2,070. Flexbury, Staniford, Well, Stamford Hill and Pease are placed here.
