To The Constable of the Parish of Padstow
WHEREAS MARY ANN NANCE of the Parish of Padstow in the
said County single Woman, did, by her Examination, taken
in Writing, upon Oath, before CHARLES LYNE, Clerk one of
his Majesty’s Justices of the Peace in and for the said
County on the thirteenth day of November Instant
declare, That on the Thirteenth Day of October now last
past at Padstow in the Parish of Padstow in the County
aforesaid, she the said MARY ANN NANCE was delivered of
a male Bastard Child; and that the said Bastard Child is
likely to become chargeable to the Parish of Padstow in
the said County and that JOHN ROAKE of Devonport in the
County of Devon, shoemaker did beget the said Child on
the body of her the said MARY ANN NANCE And whereas JOHN
WHITFORD one of the Overseers of the Poor of the parish
of Padstow aforesaid, in order to indemnify the said
Parish in the Premises, hath applied to us to issue our
Warrant for the apprehending of the said JOHN ROAKE We
therefore hereby command you immediately to apprehend
the said JOHN ROAKE and to bring him before us or some
other of his said Majesty’s Justices of the Peace for
the said County to find Security to indemnify the said
Parish of Padstow or else to find sufficient Surety for
his Appearance at the next general Quarter Sessions of
the Peace to be holden for the said County and to abide
and perform such Order or Orders as shall be made, in
Pursuance of an Act passed in the Eighteenth Year of the
Reign of her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth, concerning
Bastards begotten and born out of lawful Matrimony.
Given under our Hands and Seals the Twenty sixth day of
November in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight
Hundred and thirty three.
