THE Order of HUMPHRY WILLYAMS and RICHARD GULLY
BENNET Esquires two of His Majesty’s Justices of the
Peace, in and for the said County, one whereof is of the
Quorum, and both residing next unto the limits of the
Parish Church within the Parish of Padstow in the said
County, made the fifth day of January One Thousand Eight
Hundred and thirty concerning a male Bastard Child,
lately born in the Parish of Padstow aforesaid, of the
body of MARGARET SLAWSON Single Woman.
WHEREAS it hath been duly made to appear unto us the
said Justices, as well upon the complaint of the
Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said
Parish of Padstow as upon the Oath of the said MARGARET
SLAWSON that she the said MARGARET SLAWSON on the thirty
first day of October last past was delivered of a male
Bastard Child, at the Town of & in the Parish of Padstow
in the said County, and that the said Bastard Child is
now chargeable to the said parish of Padstow and likely
so to continue; and further that WILLIAM HOOPER ELLIOTT
of the said parish of Padstow Labourer did beget the
said Bastard Child, on the body of her the said MARGARET
SLAWSON AND WHEREAS the said WILLIAM HOOPER ELLIOTT has
appeared before us, but has not shewn any sufficient
cause why he the said WILLIAM HOOPER ELLIOTT shall not
be the reputed Father of the said Bastard Child,
We, therefore, upon examination of the cause and
circumstances of the premises, as well upon the Oath of
the said MARGARET SLAWSON as otherwise, do hereby
adjudge him the said WILLIAM HOOPER ELLIOTT to be the
reputed Father of the said Bastard Child. And thereupon
we do order, as well for the better relief of the said
parish of Padstow as for the sustentation and relief of
the said Parish of Padstow as for the sustentation and
relief of the said Bastard Child, that the said WILLIAM
HOOPER ELLIOTT shall and do forthwith, upon notice of
this our Order, pay or cause to be paid, to the said
Churchwardens and Overseers of the poor of the said
Parish of Padstow or to some or one of them, the Sum of
Two pounds Six Sshillings and eight pence for and
towards the reasonable charges and expenses incident to
the said Birth, and for and towards the maintenance of
the said Bastard Child, to the time of making this our
Order; And whereas it further appeared unto us the said
Justices, as well as upon the Oath of JOHN KENDALL as
otherwise, that the reasonable Costs of apprehending and
securing the said WILLIAM HOOPER ELLIOTT and the Costs
of this our Order of Filiation, do amount together to
the Sum of Three Pounds and Twelve Shillings We, the
said Justices, do thereupon further order that the said
WILLIAM HOOPER ELLIOTT shall and do forthwith likewise
pay the said last-mentioned Sum of three pounds and
twelve shillings for the indemnifying the said Parish of
Padstow against the said last-mentioned Sum of three
pounds and two shillings And we do also hereby further
order, that the said WILLIAM HOOPER ELLIOTT shall
likewise pay or cause to be paid to the Churchwardens
and Overseers of the poor, of the said Parish of Padstow
for the time being, or to one or some of them, the Sum
of One shilling and eight pence weekly and every week
from this present time, for and towards the keeping,
sustentation, and maintenance of the said Bastard Child,
for and during so long a time as the said Bastard Child
shall be chargeable to the said Parish of Padstow And we
do further order that the said MARGARET HAWSON shall
also pay or cause to be paid, to the said Churchwardens
and Overseers of the Poor, of the said Parish of Padstow
for the time being, or to some or one of them, the Sum
of Ten pence weekly and every week, so long as the said
Bastard Child shall be chargeable to the said Parish of
Padstow in case she shall not nurse and take care of the
said Child herself. GIVEN under our Hands and Seals, the
Day and Year first above written.
