THE Order of HUMPHRY WILLYAMS Esquire and WILLIAM
MOLESWORTH Clerk two of His Majesty’s Justices of the
Peace, in and for the said County, one whereof is of the
Quorum, and both residing next unto the limits of the
Parish Church within the Parish of Padstow in the said
County, made the twenty third Day of August One Thousand
Eight hundred and thirty two concerning a male Bastard
Child, lately born in the Parish of Padstow aforesaid,
of the body of LEAH MAY Single Woman.
WHEREAS it hath been duly made to appear unto us the
said Justices, as well upon the complaint of the
Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said
Parish of Padstow as upon the Oath of the said LEAH MAY
that she the said LEAH MAY on the first Day of June last
past was delivered of a male Bastard Child, at Padstow
in the Parish of Padstow in the said County, and that
the said Bastard Child is now chargeable to the said
Parish of Padstow and likely to so continue: and further
that ROBERT JOHN HUGHES of the Parish of Penzance in the
said County, Mariner did beget the said Bastard Child,
on the body of her the said LEAH MAY AND WHEREAS it hath
been duly proved to us upon oath that the said ROBERT
JOHN HUGHES hath been duly summoned to appear before us
the said Justices to the end that we might examine into
the cause and circumstances of the premises but he the
said ROBERT JOHN HUGHES hath neglected to appear before
us according to such Summons.
We, therefore, upon examination of the cause and
circumstances of the premises, as well upon the Oath of
the said LEAH MAY as otherwise, do hereby adjudge him
the said ROBERT JOHN HUGHES to be the reputed Father of
the said Bastard Child. And thereupon we do order, as
well for the better relief of the said Parish of Padstow
as for the sustentation and relief of the said Bastard
Child, that the said ROBERT JOHN HUGHES shall and do
forthwith, upon notice of this our Order, pay or cause
to be paid, to the said Churchwardens and Overseers of
the Poor of the said Parish of Padstow or to some or one
of them, the Sum of two pounds for and towards the
reasonable charges and expenses incident to the said
Birth, and for and towards the maintenance of the said
Bastard Child, to the time of making this our Order: And
whereas it further appeared unto us the said Justices,
as well upon the Oath of JOHN PEARSE as otherwise, that
the reasonable Costs of apprehending and securing the
said ROBERT JOHN HUGHES and the Costs of this our Order
of Filiation, do amount together to the Sum of two
pounds and eight shillings We, the said Justices, do
thereupon further order that the said ROBERT JOHN HUGHES
shall and do forthwith likewise pay the said
last-mentioned Sum of two pounds and eight shillings for
the indemnifying the said parish of Padstow against the
last-mentioned Sum of two pounds and eight shillings And
we do also hereby further order, that the said ROBERT
JOHN HUGHES shall likewise pay or cause to be paid to
the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor, of the said
Parish of Padstow for the time being, or to one or some
of them, the Sum of two shillings weekly and every week
from this present time, for and towards the keeping,
sustentation, and maintenance of the said Bastard Child,
for and during so long a time as the said Bastard Child
shall be chargeable to the said Parish of Padstow And we
do further order that the said LEAH MAY shall also pay
or cause to be paid to the said Churchwardens and
Overseers of the Poor, of the said Parish of Padstow for
the time being, or to some or one of them, the Sum of
ten pence weekly and every week, so long as the said
Bastard Child shall be chargeable to the said parish of
Padstow in case she shall not nurse and take care of the
said Child herself. GIVEN under our Hands and Seals, the
Day and Year first above written.
