In the Matter of Captain HUGHES’ Bastardy

March 10   Postage of a letter from Mr. Pearse Overseer of Padstow, including the order of Filiation herein, and desiring us to write to Mr. John of Penzance, to know if he paid the late Mr. Brown, any money in this matter, and requesting payment from Captain Hughes of the money that might be then due   - - 1

  15   Postage of letter from Mr. John saying no money had been paid in the matter but that Captain Hughes would receive his pay, on the 20th of that month, and that he would pay the demand of the parish officers to him, and he would remit it to us immediately     - 9
April 9   Preparing an account of the money due from Hughes up to Lady day last, and at Mr. Pearce’s request we submitted the same to Mr. John at the Sessions conferring with him and explaining the accounts when he promised to write Capt. Hughes on the subject     6 8
June 6   In the matter of Brewer a Lunatic postage of letter from Mr. Osborne enclosing Mr. Whitefield’s Bill herein and requesting our opinion thereon     0 1
  22   Attending the Overseers at Padstow this day when we advised them that by the 9 Geo 4 - Cap 40 they were only liable to pay the Charges subsequent to the order of removal and attending also on Mr. Whitefield when it was agreed we should see him on the Tuesday following at St. Columb and he would then say what he would take     13 4

June 26   Attending at Padstow this day and took the Examination of Daniel Stone (very long) by
which it appeared he belonged to the Parish of Occold In Suffolk )

Novr 19   In consequence of the death of Daniel Stone and his widow having become chargeable to the parish of Padstow writing a long explanatory letter to the parish officers of Occold stating that an examination had Been taken previous to the death of Daniel Stone by which it appeared his widow belonged to Occold, and desiring to know if  they would take the pauper without the Expense of a suspended order

  25   Postage of letter from the parish officers of Occold stating that they had made enquiries but were not satisfied of Daniel Stone ever having gained a settlement in Occold, but required a copy of the Examination of Daniel Stone, and if they could be satisfied the Widow belonged to them they would make her a proper allowance     1 2
Decr 3   Writing a long explanatory letter to the over- seers of Occold and also the substance of the examination of Daniel Stone     5 0
  10   Postage of letter from Occold stating they had received our letter which was satisfactory that the widow belonged to the parish of Occold and that if the parish officers of Padstow would be pleased to pay any weekly allowance they thought proper they would promptly pay them again in any way fixed on
Attending on the overseers of Padstow and communicating the contents of the last letter from Occold

Decr 3   Having seen Mr. Beckerleg of Penzance at the last Sessions and made enquiries of him respecting Captain Hughes he informed us that Captain Hughes would receive his pay in about a month from that time, and that it would be likely he would then pay the money due, to the parish of Padstow; in consequence of Captain Hughes not having made any payment

      Mr. Beckerleg to desire him to speak to Captain Hughes on the subject if he was at Penzance, but if he was not there, to let us know what ship he was in ) 5 0     5 0
  10   Postage from Mr. Beckerleg in reply that Captain Hughes could not then pay the money and hoped the parish would grant him the indulgence of a few weeks when a great part, if not all the money due should be paid       9
