Apprenticeship Indenture, James Grigg to Robert Grigg, dated 30 March 1838Document 1 This Indenture, made the
thirtieth Day of March in the first Year of the
Reign of our Sovereign Lady Queen Victoria by the Grace of God
of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland Queen defender of the
Faith, in the Year of our Lord, One Thousand Eight Hundred and thirty
eight Witnesseth, That in Pursuance and in Execution of
an Order under the hands of (blank) and (blank) Two of
her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace, acting in and for the Hundred
of Pydar within the County of Cornwall, bearing date this
thirtieth Day of March (testified by their allowance
hereof.) John Pearse & Gregory Osborne Churchwardens
of the Parish of Padstow and John Williams and John Parke
Martyn Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Padstow
have put and placed, and by these Presents do put and place James
Grigg aged eleven Years, and upwards a poor Child of the
said parish Apprentice to Roberts Grigg of the same Parish Mason
- with him to dwell, and serve, from the day of the date
of these Presents, until the said Apprentice shall accomplish his
full age of twenty one years according to the Statute in that
case made and provided. During all which Term, the said Apprentice
his said Master faithfully shall serve in all lawful
Business according to his power, wit, and ability, and
honestly, orderly, and obediently in all things, demean and behave
himself towards his the said Master and all
his during the said Term. And the said Robert Grigg for
himself, his Executors and Administrators, doth
Covenant and Grant to and with the said Churchwardens and Overseers, and
every of them, their and every of their Executors and Administrators,
and their and every of their Successors for the time being, by these
Presents, that he the said Robert Grigg the said Apprentice
James Grigg shall teach and instruct, or cause to be taught or
instructed in the best way and manner that he can in the Art and
Mystery of a Mason And shall and will, during all the Term
aforesaid, find, provide, and allow unto the said Apprentice. Meet,
competent, and sufficient, Meat, Drink, and Apparel, Lodging, Washing,
and all other Things necessary for an Apprentice: Provided Always, that
the last mentioned Covenant on the Part and Behalf of the said
Robert Grigg his Executors and Administrators, to be done and
performed, shall continue to be in Force for no longer time than three
Calander Months next after the Death of the said Robert Grigg
in case the said Robert Grigg shall happen to die during the
continuance of such Apprenticeship, according to the Provision of an Act
passed in the Thirty Second Year of the Reign of King George the Third,
intituled "An Act for the further regulation of Parish Apprentices." And
also, shall and will so provide for the Apprentice, that he be not in
any way a Charge to the said parish of Padstow or Parishioners
of the same; but of and from all Charge, shall and will save the said
parish of Padstow harmless and indemnified during the Term:

Document) Document 2 To John Williams and John Parke Martyn Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Padstow in the said County of Cornwall. Whereas you the said Overseeers, having proposed unto us Frederick Rogers Esq. and William Molesworth Clerk Two of her Majesty’s Justices of the Peace, acting in and for the Hundred of Pydar within the said County of Cornwall, under and by virtue of an Act of Parliament, passed in the Fifty Sixth Year of the Reign of his late Majesty George the Third, intituled "An Act to regulate the Binding of Parish Apprentices," to bind James Grigg a poor Child, aged eleven years belonging to your said parish of Padstow Apprentice to Robert Grigg of The said parish of Padstow in the County of Cornwall And whereas we the Justices having this Day enquired into the propriety of binding the said Child an Apprentice to the said Robert Grigg and having particularly examined and considered the several Directions contained in the said recited Act and also the circumstances and character of the said Robert Grigg do hereby declare that the said Robert Grigg is a fit person to take the said James Grigg Apprentice as aforesaid; and do Order that you the said Overseers shall be at Liberty to Bind such Child Apprentice accordingly.- Given under our hands this thirtieth day of March in the Year of our Lord, One Thousand Eight Hundred and thirty eight (signed) Wm.
