Apprenticeship Indenture, Jane Allington to William Hawke, dated 7 August 1827

This Indenture, made the Seventh Day of August in the Eighth Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Fourth by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, and in the Year of our Lord, one Thousand Eight Hundred and Twenty seven Witnesseth, that in Pursuance and in Execution of an Order under the Hands of William Molesworthy Clerk and Richard Gully Bennet Esquire two of his Majesty’s Justices of the Peace acting in and for the Hundred of Pydar within the County of Cornwall bearing Date the seventh Day of August instant (testified by their Allowance hereof.) Richard Blake Hellyar and John Pearse Churchwardens of the Parish of Padstow in the said County And John Kendall and Thomas Hawkey Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Padstow have put and placed, and by these Presents do put and place Jane Allington aged Ten Years, and upwards, a poor Child of the said Parish Apprentice to William Hawke of the Parish of Padstow aforesaid Farmer with him to dwell and serve, from the day of the Date of these Presents, until the said Apprentice shall accomplish her full age of Twenty one years or day of Marriage according to the Statute in that Case made and provided, During all which Term the said Apprentice her said Master faithfully shall serve in all lawful Business, according to her Power, Wit and Ability, and honestly, orderly, and obediently in all Things demean and behave her self towards him the said Master and all his during the said Term. And the said William Hawke for him self, and his Executors and Administrators, doth Covenant and Grant to and with the said Churchwardens and Overseers, and every of them, their and every of their Executors and Administrators, and their and every of their Successors for the Time being, by these Presents, that he the said William Hawke the said Apprentice in the art of Housewifery shall teach and instruct, or cause to be taught or instructed in the best Way and Manner that he can. And shall and will, during all the Term aforesaid, find provide and allow unto the said Apprentice, meet, competent and sufficient, Meat, Drink, and Apparel, Lodging, Washing, and all other Things necessary and fit for an Apprentice: (Provided always, That the last mentioned Covenant on the Part and Behalf of the said William Hawke his Executors and Administrators, to be done and performed, shall continue and be in Force for no longer Time than Three Calendar Months next after the Death of the said William Hawke in Case the said William Hawke shall happen to die during the continuance of such Apprenticeship, according to the Provision of an Act passed in the Thirty-second Year of the Reign of King George the Third, intitulted, "An Act for the further Regulation of Parish Apprentices.") And also shall and will so provide for the said Apprentice, that he be not any way a Charge to the said Parish of Padstow or Parishioners of the same:but of and from all Charge, shall and will save the said Parish or Parishioners harmless and indemnified during the Term: In witness whereof the Parties abovesaid to the present Indentures interchangeably set their Hands and Seals, the Day and Year above written.

To John Kendall and Thomas Hawkey Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Padstow the said County of Cornwall. Whereas you the Overseers having proposed unto us William Molesworth Clerk and Richard Gully Bennet Esqre two of his Majesty’s Justices of the Peace acting in and for the Hundred of Pydar within the said County of Cornwall, under and by virtue of an Act of Parliament passed in the Fifty-sixth Year of the Reign of his late Majesty George the Third, intituled "An Act to regulate the Binding of Parish Apprentices," to bind Jane Allington a poor Child aged ten years belonging to your said Parish of Padstow Apprentice to William Hawke of the Parish of Padstow in the County of Cornwall Farmer And whereas we the said Justices having this Day enquired into the propriety of binding the said Child an Apprentice to the said William Hawke and having particularly examined and considered the several Directions contained in the said recited Act, and also circumstances and character of the said William Hawke do hereby declare that the said William Hawke is a fit Person to take the said Jane Allington Apprentice as aforesaid ; and do order that you and the said Overseers shall be at Liberty to Bind such Child Apprentice accordingly.- Given under our hands this seventh day of August in the Year of our Lord, One Thousand Eight Hundred and 27.
