The Order of John Arscott Esqr and Wrey Jans Esqr. two of his Majesty’s
Justices of the Peace in and for ye sd County - one whereof is of
ye Quorum and both Residing near the sd Parish of North Petherwin
in ye sd County
made the 16th day of October in the 22nd Year of the
Reign of his Majesty King George the third concerning a
Female Bastard Child lately Born in ye Parish of North
Petherwin aforesd.
of the Body of Elizabeth Gregory single woman.
Whereas it hath appeard unto us as well upon the
Complaint of ye Church Wardens and overseers of ye Poor
of ye sd Parish
of North Petherwin as upon ye Oath of ye said Elizabeth
Gregory that she ye afsd
Elizabeth Gregory on the 28th day of Augst last past was
Delivered of a female Bastard Child at Kingsbridge in ye
sd Parish of
North Petherwin and that the sd
Bastard child is likely to become chargeable to ye sd Parish of North Petherwin,
and further that John Pearse did begot the said Bastard
Child and whereas the sd
John Pearse hath this Day appeared before us and hath
not shewed any cause why he should not be the Reputed
father of ye sd
Bastard child We therefore do adjudge the sd Jno Pearse to be the
Father of the sd
Bastard child. And thereupon Do Order as well for ye
better relief of ye sd
Parish of North Petherwin as well as for the sustenation
and relief of the sd
Bastard child and that the sd
John Pearse shall and do forthwith pay or cause to be
paid to ye Church Wardens and Overseers of the Poor of
ye sd parish of
North Petherwin the sum of Twenty Shillings for ye Lying
Inn and Ten pence per weekly and every week from the
Date hereof towards the Sustenance and maintainance of
ye said Bastard child so long as she shall be chargeable
to ye sd Parish
of North Petherwin.
And we do further Order that the sd Elizabeth Gregory shall
also pay or cause to be pd
to the Church wardens and overseers of the poor of the sd Parish of North Petherwin
for ye time being five pence weekly and every week so
long as the sd
child shall be chargeable to the sd Parish of North Petherwin
in case she shall not nurse and take care of the sd Child. Given under our
hands and Seals the day and year above written.
