Letter addressed to
Camborne 5th February 1785 I have received your letter of the 29th and am rather surprised at the contents “That I promised to remit you £200 about Xmas” as I am confident I never made you any such promise nor is at all likely that I should – especially as for some time past I have not considered myself concerned in your Illogan Business ( and which I ? is not unknown to you) other than permitting Newton to transact it for you, and surely, if I had I certainly would have engaged, nor would you I am persuaded expect me to engage, to remit you £200 without knowing whether I should receive such sum or not from the parish houses of Illogan. I recollect when you last did me the favour of calling on me here that you expressed a wish for the arrears to be got in as soon as possible and at the same time mentioned that if £200 could have been got in so as for you to have that sum about Xmas it would be very convenient for you and I then told you that I would order (as I accordingly did) Newton to press the persons in arrears to pay them and this is all to the best of my recollection that passed between us respecting this matter. Since which Newton has employed a good deal of his time and I have reason to be believe endeavour as much as in his power to get the arrears - but I don’t find that his success has been great, his receipts amounting to between 20 and 30 pounds as he informs me. I am Reverend Sir Return to St Minver Parish Page
