The Will of John Hocken, dated 25 May 1775

In the Name of God Amen this twenty fifth day of May in the year one thousand seven hundred and seventy five I John Hocken of the parish of Michaelstow and County of Cornwall being in perfect health and sound memory / thanks be to Almighty God / do make this to be my last Will and Testament in manner and form following that is to say – First I recommend my Soul to Almighty God hoping to be saved by the merits of my Blessed Saviour Jesus Christ and my Body to be buried in such decent and Christian Manner as my Executor hereafter named shall think most and convenient and having a mind to dispose of my worldly effects which it hath pleased God to Bless me with I give & bequeath as followeth revoking all former Wills by me made I give & bequeath unto my wife Ann Hocken the Two best Cows the best Mare or Nag three best Beds the Clock & all the rest of my Household Furniture except the large Table in the Kitchen the largest Table in the Parlour – and the other five beds that are left after her choice -- Item – I give & bequeath unto my sister Jane Bastard the Wife of John Bastard Junr. the best bed in the Middle Chamber – Item – I give and bequeath unto my Sister Margaret Hocken the wife of William Hocken Junr. the little bed in the Middle Chamber – Item – I give and bequeath unto my wife Ann Hocken the seven hogsheads and one pipe that was bought from Treveagon.- Item I give and bequeath unto my Mother in Law Mary Yeolton the sum of ten pounds to be paid by my executor in four months after my decease – Item – I give and bequeath unto my Nephew John Furnace the Son of Saml. Furnace the Sum of Ten pounds to be paid by my Executor in one year after my decease – Item – I give and bequeath unto my Sister Jane Bastard the Sum of Five pounds to be paid by my Executor in one year after my decease – Item – I give and bequeath unto my
Sister Florence Hooper the Wife of Henry Hooper the Sum of One Shilling to be paid by my Executor in one year after my decease –

Item – I give and bequeath unto my Sister Elizabeth Furnace the Wife of Samuel Furnace the Sum of One shilling to be paid by my Executor in one year after my decease – Item – I give & bequeath unto my Brother William Hocken the Lands of Tredarrup the Great Cross and Treveagon Downs paying my widow out of it Twenty pounds yearly during her natural life – Item – I give and bequeath unto my wife Ann Hocken the three Plots called by the name of the Matthews Crosses during her natural life and after her decease unto my Sister Margaret Hocken & her Children during their natural life – Item – I give and bequeath unto my wife Ann Hocken the three Plots lying in Tregreenwell called by the name of the Two Hills and the Long Meadow with the Watering Place thereunto belonging during her natural life and if Sarah Hocken the daughter of Jane Bastard goes from her the said Ann Hocken then she is to pay her forty shillings yearly out of same Plots – Item – I give and bequeath unto Sarah Hocken the daughter of Jane Bastard after the death of my wife three Plots lying in Tregreenwell called by the name of the Two Hills and Long Meadow with the Watering Place thereunto belonging & after her decease if no Child or Children then I give it unto my Sister Jane Bastard and her Children I give & bequeath unto the Poor Labourers of the parish of Michaelstow that have no pay the Sum of Five pounds to be paid by my Executor in one year after my decease to be equally divided amongst them and if my Wife should be pregnant at the time of my decease then the whole will be void ad of no effect. All the rest of my Goods and Chattles not already given and bequeathed I give unto my Brother William Hocken whom I make my whole and sole Executor of this my last will and Testament In Witness hereto I put my hand and seal the day and year aforesaid
