St Stephen by Launceston Parish Page
Settlement Paper for John Hawkin, dated 9 September 1746
Cornwall To wit. To the Churchwardens and Overseers of the
Poor of the Parish of St Stephens by Launceston in the County aforesaid to
remove and convey And to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the
Parish of Luxilian in the County aforesaid To receive take and provide for
Whereas Complaint hath been made by you the Churchwardens and Overseers of the
Poor of the Parish of St Stephens by Launceston aforesaid unto us Whose Names
and Seals are hereunto Set Two of His Majesty’s Justices of the Peace of and for
the said County (and one of the Quorum) That John Hawkin lately Intruded himself
into your said Parish of St Stephens by Launceston And Continues to reside there
not having Gained any Legal Settlement there according to the Laws relating to
the Settlement of the Poor in that Case made and provided. And there is become
Chargeable. And whereas upon due Examination and Enquiry made into the premises
.... Oath of the said John Hawkin it appears unto us that the matter of the Said
Complaint is true and we do adjudge that the said John Hawkin is become
Chargeable to the said Parish of St Stephens by Launceston And we do likewise
adjudge that the place of his Last Legal Settlement is in the Parish of Luxilian
in the County of Cornwall.
These are therefore, in his Majesty’s Name to Order and require you the said
Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of St Stephens by
Launceston aforesaid that you or Some or One of you forthwith remove and Convey
the said John Hawkin from your Said parish of St Stephens by Launceston to the
said Parish of Luxilian aforesaid and him Deliver to the Churchwardens and
Overseers of the Poor there or to Some or One of them together with this Warrant
or Order or a true Copy hereof hereby also requiring you the Said Churchwardens
and Overseers of the Poor of the parish of Luxilian aforesaid to receive the
said John Hawkin Into your Said parish of Luxilian And provide for him as your
Own Parishoner [sic]. Given under our Hands and Seals at South petherwin In the
said County this Ninth Day of September And in the Year of our Lord 1746
