Settlement Paper for William Downing, dated 19 June 1745

Cornwall To wit. To the Church-wardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of St Winnow in the County of Cornwall and to the Church-wardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Luxulyon in the said County
Whereas Complaint hath been made by you the Church-wardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of St Winnow unto us whose Hands and Seals are hereunto set, Two of His Majesty’s Justices of the Peace (One being of the Quorum) for the County aforesaid, That William Downing hath lately intruded himself into your said Parish of St Winnow there to inhabit as a Parishioner contrary to the Laws relating to the Settlement of the Poor, and is there like to become Chargeable, if not timely prevented: And whereas upon due Examination and Enquiry made into the Premises upon Oath by us the said Justices, it appears unto us, and we accordingly adjudge, That the said William Downing is likely to become chargeable unto the said Parish of St Winnow and that the last legal Place of Settlement of the said William Downing is in the said Parish of Luxulyon
THESE are therefore, in his Majesty’s Name, to order and require you the said Church-wardens and Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of St Winnow aforesaid, that you, or some of you, do forthwith remove and convey the said William Downing from your said Parish of St Winnow to the said Parish of Luxulyon, and him deliver to the Church-wardens and Overseers of the Poor there, or some or one of them, together with this our Warrant or Order, or a true Copy hereof; whereby they are likewise required in His Majesty’s Name, and by Virtue of the Statutes in such Case made, forthwith to receive the said William Downing into the said Parish and provide for him as their own Parishioner. Given under our Hands and Seals, the 19th Day of June in the eighteenth Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Second now of Great Britain, and so forth and in the Year of our Lord one Thousand Seven Hundred and forty five
