Will of Merriam Canning, dated 21 August 1746

In the Name of God Amen I Merriam Canning of the borrough of Liskeard in the county of Cornwall Widdow being weak in Body, but of sound and Disparing mind memory and Understanding (praised be God for the same) and considering the Uncertainty of this Mortal Life, do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in Manner and From following (That is to say). First I recommend my Soul into the Hands of a Mercifull God in Hopes of a joyfull Resurrection to Eternall Life in the Kingdom of Heaven thro’ the alone Merits and Intercession of my Dear Saviour Jesus Christ And as for my Body I bequeath it to the Earth from whence it came to be decently Buried at the Direction and Discretion of my Executor Hereinafter named. I give devise and bequeath Unto my Grandson George the Son of John Hatch of Liskeard aforesaid Ironmonger All that my Dwelling House wherein I now Live with its appurtenances Situated and lying in or near Church Street In Liskeard aforesd: To Hold the same to my said Grandson His Executors, Admds and assigns during the Residue and Remainder of my right and Interest therein I give and bequeath unto my Grand-Daughter Elizabeth Hatch Daughter of the aforesaid John Hatch All the Residue And Remainder of my term and Interest yet to come and Expire of and in two Fields or Closes of Land lying At the lower end of Barn-street in Liskeard aforesaid Calld and known by the name of Burt’s Ground, she the said Elizabeth Hatch paying Yearly there on twenty shillings unto Elizabeth Pearce Widow Daughter of my Sister Mary King during the Life time of the said Elizabeth Pearce I give unto my said Sister Mary King the sum of One Shilling a Week to be paid her out of the Sole Com of Liskeard Aforesaid to be pd. Her weekly by my Executors hereinafter named, during the Life time of Henry Pawling of Liskeard Velmonger, who is the only Life thereon. I give unto my Grandson George Canning the sum of ten Pounds of lawfull mony of Great Britain to be paid him by my Executor hereinafter named at his attaining his Age of twenty one years I give unto John Hatch and Mary Hatch Son and Daughter of the said John Hatch the sum of Five pounds a piece to be paid them respectively at their attaining their Ages of one and Twenty and unto Grace the wife of the said John Hatch I give the sum of one Guinea to buy her a Mourning Ring to be worn in Remembrance of me, and as for and concerning All the Rest residue and Remainder of my Goods , Chattles, Rights, Creditts and Effects whatsoever, which I shall or may leave behind me at the time of my Death /after payment of my Just Debts Legacys And funeral Expences / I do hereby Give devise and bequeath the same unto my Said Son in Law John Hatch whom I hereby constitute and appoint whole and Sole Executor of this my last will and Testament Revoking hereby All former and other Wills by me at any Time Made In Witness whereof I have hereunto Set my Hand and Seal this Twenty first Day of August in the year of our Lord 1746.

The before written Will of the said Merriam Canning was proved in common Form the Ninth Day of October 1747 Before the Revd. Mr. Jonathan Baron Clerk Surrogate er and Admion er of the goods er of the Said Deced and of all things howsoever concerning the Said Will was granted to the Executor in the said Will named, being first Sworn er (Saving er)

      The Before written Will is a true Copy Examined and Compar’d with the Original this tenth Day of Octr: 1747.
