LEWANICK is a township, parish and village 5 miles south-west from Launceston, 9 north-west from Callington and 13 north from Liskeard, in East Hundred, Launceston Union, East deanery, Cornwall archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter, east Cornwall; it is situated on the River Inney and the Launceston and Liskeard road. The church is an old freestone building (the stone found in a quarry of some note, formerly worked in the township), in the perpendicular style of architecture, has tower, nave, north and south aisles and 6 bells. The living is a vicarage worth £180, with residence and 35 acres of glebe land, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor; the Rev. H. Archer, B.A., is the incumbent. There are chapels for Wesleyans, Methodists and Bible Christians; a school is attached to each. There is a National school for boys and girls, and there is a Suday school held at the schoolroom. The population in 1851 was 747 and the acreage is about 4000. the soil is good; the sunbsoil freestone. Francis Rodd Esq., Edward Archer Esq., Mr John Wevill, Mr Richard Luskey and William D. Hanson Esq., are the chief landowners. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. Trelakse House, the seat of Edward Archer, Esq., is a fine building, pleasantly situated about 1 mile south-east from the church.
