Will of Peter Trewbody, dated 4 November 1604
In the name of God Amen: The Twenty
fourthe daye of November in the Second yeare of the
raigne of our Soveraigne Lord James of great Britaine
Frannce and Ireland Kinge defender of the faithe &cs
Anno domini One thousand Sixe hundred, and Fower
I Peter TREWBODYE of Castell in the parrishe of
Lanlevery within the Countye of Cornewall, beinge sicke
in bodye but sounde in minde (Laude be unto god) make my
Last will and Testament in manner and forme followinge,
First I bequeathe my soule to our Lord Jesu Christe and
my bodie to be buried in christian buriall
Item I doe geve and bequeathe unto Grace TREWBODYE my
daughter Threescore (60) poundes to be paide to
the saide Grace when she shall accomplishe the age of
Fifteene yeeres,
Item I doe geve unto Charles TREWBODYE my sonne
Threescore (60) poundes to be paide to the
saide Charles when he shall accomplishe the age of
Twentye yeares, Item I doe geve unto Trysteram
TREWEBODYE my sonne Fiftye poundes to be paide to the
saide Tristeram when he shall accomplishe the age of
Fifteene yeares,
Item I doe alsoe geve unto Thomas TREWBODYE my sonne
Fiftye poundes to be paide to the saide Thomas when he
shall accomplishe the age of Fifteene yeeres. Item I doe
geve to the childe which my wief nowe bearethe in her
wombe thirtye poundes to be paide at the ende of one
yeare after the birthe of the saide Childe
Provided alwaies, and it is my will and meaninge, that
if any of my saide Children doe dye before they
accomplishe the age abovesaide that then the somme by me
given shall remaine and be unto the rest of my Children
which shall by Godes permission accomplishe the age
abovesaide
Item I doe alsoe geve unto Margarett my wief all my
landes and rentes in Sainte Austell called Bossconiell
To have and to holde all the saide landes and rentes
unto the saide Margaret my wief untill my sonne Charles
TREWBODYE shall accomplishe the age of Twentie and one
yeeres,
Item I doe further geve unto my saide wief free libertye
to sell and Cutt any
timber there nowe growing in and uppon any of my landes
called Castell and Bosconiell For the buildinge or
repayringe ^of any houses or yeatts (gates)
uppon the saide landes, Provided and it is my will and
meaninge that if Margarett my wief doe marrye before
Charles TREWBODYE my sonne doe accomplishe the age of
twentye and one yeares, that then the saide lands &
rentes in St Austell called Bosconiell shall remaine and
be unto my saide Sonne Charles TREWBODYE and his heires,
Item I doe geve unto the poore of the parishe of
Lanleverye Sixe shillinges to be distributed by mine
executor.
Item I doe geve unto the poore of Lestuthiell sixe
shillinges. The rest of my goodes and Chattells not
geven nor bequeathed I doe geve and bequeathe unto
Margarett my wief and her I doe constitute and appointe
to be my sole and whole executrix. I doe alsoe ordaine
constitute and appoint Walter ROSCAROCKE of Trevallgo
Gentleman, and Richard LYNAME of Skewe to be my
Overseers to see this
my last will and testament performed Alsoe my will and
meaninge is that my Children shalbe mayntayned and
governed by mine executrix untill they have accomplished
the age abovsaide

the County of Cornwall aforesaid on the twelfth day of
September in the 19th Year of the reign of our Lord
James, by the grace of God, now King of England, France
and Ireland, defender of the faith etc: And the 55th
year of the reign of Scotland. Before Richard BILLINGE
Esquire, Escheator and Feoffor of the most Illustrious
Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, Duke of Cornwall and of
York and of the County of Chester, in the County of
Cornwall and Devon by virtue of the Commission of the
said Lord Duke of Cornwall, in the Nature of Mandate,
Escheator and Feoffor of the same, direct and for this
annexed Inquisition to the inquiry after the death of
Peter TREWBODYE lately of Lanliverye in the County of
Cornwall aforesaid noble, deceased. And in the presence
of Edmund DONRICH gent, Feoffor of the said Lord of the
aforesaid County of Cornwall, by the oath of Thomas
CARMINOWE Esquire, James PARKER Esquire, William
COURTNEY Esquire, Thomas BLIGH Esquire, Thomas HOBLYN
Esquire, Edward CHEAPMAN Esquire, Thomas KESTELL
Esquire, Henry REEDE gent, John BERE gent, Richard
NEWTON gent, Thomas COWLE gent, Henry BATH gent and
William SYMONS gent, Who declare upon their oath that
the said Peter TREWBODYE named in the said Commission,
before his death was seised in his Lord, as of fee, of
and in, one Messuage, one garden, one orchard, thirty
acres of land, six acres of meadow, twenty acres of
pasture and ten acres of furze and heath, with the
appurtenances, called Castell, within the parish of
Lanliverye in the aforesaid County of Cornwall, AND
three Messuages, three gardens, three orchards, Forty
acres of land, six acres of meadow, twenty acres of
pasture and Sixty acres of furze and heath, with the
appurtenances, in Bosconwall alias Bosconnell, within
the parish of Saint Austell in the aforesaid County of
Cornwall, AND one Messuage and Thirty acres of land
meadow pasture furze and heath, with the appurtenances,
in Enysvarth within the parish of Luxulian in the
aforesaid County of Cornwall, AND one Messuage and ten
acres of land meadow pasture furze and heath, with the
appurtenances, in Nether Polscoth within the parish of
St Wynnowe in the aforesaid County of Cornwall, AND so
hence knowing prove to be therein seised when he died,
AND the said Jurors further declare upon their
aforementioned oath that the aforesaid Tenements, with
the appurtenances, called Castell aforesaid, were held
at the time of the death of the said Peter TREWBODYE and
were bound of John ARRUNDELL of Lanherne Esquire as of
his Manor of Nansladron, by which service Jurors do not
know AND were worth per annum for all purposes without
deductions, Sixty shillings, And that the aforesaid
Tenements with the appurtenances in Bosconwall alias
Bosconnell aforesaid were now held from the said Lord
Prince Charles Duke of Cornwall and at the time of the
death of the said Peter TREWBODYE were bound of the said
Royal Lord of his manor of Tewington parcel of his
dukedome of Cornwall, in free and pure socage for an
annual payment of seven shillings and nine pennies, one
half penny and one quarter, And suit of court twice per
annum, And they were worth per annum for all purposes
without deductions, forty shillings. And that the
aforesaid Tenements with the appurtenances, in Enysvarth
aforesaid, were held of Richard ROBERTS Knight and
Baronet, and at the time of the death of the said Peter
TREWBODYE were bound of John ROBERTS Esquire as of his
Manor of Bodwithgye in free socage, And by the yearly
rent of three pence. And they were worth per annum for
all purposes without deductions, six shillings eight
pennies. And that the aforesaid Tenements with the
appurtenances in Nether Polscoth aforesaid were held of
the aforesaid Richard ROBERTS Knight and Baronet and at
the time of the death of the said Peter TREWBODYE were
bound of Littleton TRENANCE Esquire as of his Manor of
Polscoth in free socage. And they were worth per annum
for all purposes without deductions, ten shillings. And
the said Jurors further declare upon their oaths, that
the said Peter TREWBODYE at the time of his death
neither had nor held any other or further lands,
Tenements or hereditaments, of the said Lord King or
from the said Lord Duke of Cornwall, nor from any other
person, to the knowledge of the aforesaid Jurors. And
that the said Peter TREWBODYE died on the twenty eighth
day of February in the second year of the reign of the
said Lord King James now King of England etc.,
(1604/1605) And that Charles TREWBODYE noble, is his son
and heir, And at the said time of death of the said
Peter TREWBODYE his father, was aged eight years and
twenty days. In witness whereof both the said Escheat
and Feoffor and the said Jurors have to this present
Inquest applied their Seals given the day of year and
the above named place: 1621
