Lanlivery is a parish and village, 2
miles west from Lostwithiel, a portion of which town is
in this parish; it is six miles south from Bodmin, and 7
north-east from St. Austell, in the eastern division of
the county, east division of the Hundred of Powder,
Bodmin union, Bodmin county court district, Powder rural
deanery, Cornwall archdeaconry, and diocese of Exeter,
situated on the road from St Austell to Bodmin. The
church of St. Breaca is a fine old granite building,
consisting of two aisles, transept, and chancel, with
square tower and pinnacles. The register dates from the
year 1644. The living is a vicarage, yearly value £307,
with residence and 20 acres of glebe, in the gift of
Nicholas Kendall esq., and held by the Rev. Francis
Kendall, who is non-resident; the Rev. William John
Rowland M.A. is curate in charge. There is a Free school
for boys and girls; also a chapel for Wesleyans, and two
for United Methodist Free Church. Charities of £16 are
distributed yearly. Castle, the seat of Mrs C Foster, is
a neat building, 1 ½ miles south of the town. Nicholas
Kendall esq., who is lord of the manor, Lord Robartes,
the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, Jonathan Rashleigh esq., and
Mrs. Foster, of Castle, are the principal landowners.
The soil is light, a great deal of granite; subsoil
slate. The chief crops are wheat, barley, and turnips.
The area is 6,790 acres; gross estimated rental, £7,916;
rateable value £7,075; and the population in 1871 was
1,493.
