Lanivet is a township, parish, and
village, included within the parliamentary borough of
Bodmin, from which town it is 3 miles south-west, in the
Eastern division of the county, hundred of Pydar, Bodmin
union and county court district, rural deanery of Pydar,
Cornwall archdeaconry, and Exeter diocese, situated on
the turnpike road from Bodmin to Truro. The church (name
unknown) is an old building, in the Early Perpendicular
style, has chancel, nave, aisles, porch, and tower
containing 6 bells: there is a handsome marble monument
to the Rev. N. Phillips, B.C.L.: the church was restored
and reseated in 1869; a fine organ was subscribed for
and erected at the same time. The register dates from
the year 1670. The living is a rectory, yearly value
£678, with residence and 40 acres of glebe land, in the
gift of Henry Borrow esq., and held by the Rev. Henry
John Borrow, M.A., of St. John’s College, Cambridge.
There is a Charity school for boys and girls, which
receives £80 from the rent of parish lands, which
amounts to £156 yearly, £10 is applied to apprenticing,
and £66 is distributed in bread and fuel. There are six
chapels – three for Wesleyans and three for Bible
Christians. Part of the population is engaged in mining,
there being tin and iron mines in the parish. The
remains of an old house (St. Benet’s) were restored and
repaired in 1844, and now form the residence of Capt.
Charles Eldon Serjeant: the original tower of the chapel
still remains. Lord Robartes, and Peter Hoblyn and John
Henwood esqrs. are chief landowners. The chief crops are
barley and oats, and there are extensive moorlands. The
area is 5,396 acres; gross estimated rental £5,915,
rateable value £5,354; the population is 1871 was 1,196.
