KNOW all men by these presents that we JOHN VERCOE and JOHN VERCOE the younger of the Parish of St. Clements in the County of Cornwall Yeomen are held and firmly bound to THOMAS DEVONSHIRE and THOMAS SHEER Churchwardens and JOSEPH KNIGHT and JOHN EDWARDS Overseers of the Poor of the said parish of St. Clements in the Sum of Fifty Pounds of lawful Money of Great Britain to be paid to the said Churchwardens and Overseers their Executors Administrators Successors or Assigns To which Payment well and truly to be made we bind ourselves our Heirs, Executors and Administrators and every of them jointly and severally firmly by these Presents being Sealed with our Seals Dated this first Day of September One thousand seven Hundred and seventy seven.

The Condition of this Present Obligation is such Whereas MARGARET MAY of the said Parish of St. Clements Single Woman hath in and by her Voluntary Examination taken in writing and upon Oath before FRANCIS GREGOR Esqr. one of his Majesty’s Justices of the Peace for the said County declared that she is with Child and that the said Child is likely to be born a Bastard and to be chargeable to the said parish of St. Clements and that the above bounden JOHN VERCOE the Younger is the Father of the said Child, If therefore the said JOHN VERCOE and JOHN VERCOE the younger their Heirs Exors. or Administrators do and shall from time to time and at all times hereafter save harmless and keep indemnified as well the above named Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of St. Clements and their Sucessors for the time being As also the Inhabitants and Parishioners of the said parish of St. Clements of and from all Cost Charges Damages and Expenses which shall happen for or by Reason or Means of the Birth Maintenance and Education of the said Bastard Child, Then this Obligation to be void or else to remain in full force.
