The Examination of GRACE HENDER of the parish of Saint Cleer in the said County, single Woman, taken on oath before WILLIAM JOPE Esquire One of his Majesty’s Justices of the Peace for the County aforesaid, this twenty second day of September in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and thirty two.

THIS Examinant on her oath saith that on Sunday the twelfth day of August last, she was delivered of a male Bastard Child, within the said Parish of Saint Cleer in the said County, (which Child is now living, and likely to become chargeable to the said Parish;) and that one WILLIAM RICHARDS late of the said Parish of Saint Cleer in the County aforesaid, Blacksmith is the Father of the said Male Bastard Child, and that no other Person hath had carnal knowledge of her Body, with respect to such Child, but the said WILLIAM RICHARDS and that he is the true Father of the said Bastard Child, of which she was delivered as aforesaid.

CORNWALL
to wit  

To the Constable of the Parish of Saint Cleer in the said County, and to all other Constables in the said County.

 
Whereas Information and Complaint, upon Oath, have been made before me WILLIAM JOPE Esquire one of his Majesty’s Justices of the Peace for the said County, by MATTHEW DANIEL one of the Overseers of the Poor of the parish of Saint Cleer in the County of Cornwall that, by an Order under the Hands and Seals of WILLIAM JOPE and JOHN LYNE Esquires two of his Majesty’s Justices of the Peace in and for the said County of Cornwall and both residing next unto the Limits of the Parish Church within the Parish of Saint Cleer aforesaid in the said County one whereof is of the Quorum, WILLIAM RICHARDS of Saint Cleer in the County of Cornwall Blacksmith is adjudged to be the reputed Father of a male Bastard Child, born of the Body of GRACE HENDER within the said Parish of Saint Cleer; and that in and by such Order it is ordered that the said WILLIAM RICHARDS should upon notice of the same Order pay or cause to be paid to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the said Parish or to some or one of them the Sum of Three Pounds Seven Shillings and two Pence for the maintenance of the said Bastard Child to the time of making the said order, and for the charges & expences incurred prior to the making of the said order and incident to obtaining the said Order and that the sum of one shilling and eight pence weekly from the time of making the said Order for and towards the keeping sustentation and maintenance of the said Bastard Child during so long as the said Bastard Child should be chargeable to the said Parish of Saint Cleer but that notwithstanding he the said WILLIAM RICHARDS hath had due Notice of the said Order, yet he the said WILLIAM RICHARDS hath not observed nor performed the same, and that there is now due and owing from the said WILLIAM RICHARDS unto the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Saint Cleer from the twenty third Day of March One Thousand Eight Hundred and thirty three to the fifteenth Day of May instant by and under the said Order, the Sum of three Pounds eighteen shillings and ten pence.

And whereas the said MATTHEW DANIEL one of the Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Saint Cleer aforesaid, in Order to indemnify the said Parish of Saint Cleer in the Premises, hath applied to me to issue out my Warrant for the apprehending of the said WILLIAM RICHARDS; I do therefore hereby command you immediately to apprehend the said WILLIAM RICHARDS and to bring him before me, or some other of his Majesty’s Justices of the Peace for the said County of Cornwall to answer the said Complaint. Herein fail you not.

To the Constable of the Parish of Saint Cleer in the said County and to the Keeper of the House of Corrections at Bodmin in the said County.

 
Whereas by an Order under the Hands and Seals of WILLIAM JOPE and JOHN LYNE Esquires two of his Majesty’s Justices of the Peace in and for the said County of Cornwall and both residing next unto the Limits of the Parish of Saint Cleer in the said County of Cornwall one whereof is of the Quorum, WILLIAM RICHARDS late of the said Parish of Saint Cleer in the County of Cornwall Blacksmith is adjudged to be the reputed Father of a male Bastard Child, born of the Body of GRACE HENDER Single woman in the said parish of Saint Cleer.

And whereas it was in and by such Order ordered that the said WILLIAM RICHARDS should upon Notice of the same order pay or cause to be paid to the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish or to some or one of them the Sum of Three Pounds Seven Shillings and two pence for the maintenance of the said Bastard Child to the time of making the said order and for the charges and expences incurred prior to the making of the same Order and incident to obtaining the same and also the sum of one shilling and eight pence weekly from the time of making the said order for and towards the keeping sustentation and maintenance of the said Bastard Child, during so long as the said Bastard Child should be chargeable to the said Parish of Saint Cleer

And whereas it appears unto me WILLIAM JOPE Esquire one of his Majesty’s Justices of the Peace for the said County of Cornwall on the Oath of MATTHEW DANIEL one of the Overseers of the Poor of the Parish of Saint Cleer aforesaid, that notwithstanding he the said WILLIAM RICHARDS hath had due Notice of the said Order, yet he the said WILLIAM RICHARDS hath not observed nor performed the said Order, and that there is now due and owing from the said WILLIAM RICHARDS unto the said Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of the said Parish of Saint Cleer from the twenty third Day of March One Thousand Eight Hundred and thirty three to the fifteenth Day of May instant by and under the said Order, the Sum of Three pounds eighteen Shillings and ten pence

And whereas the said WILLIAM RICHARDS being now brought before me the said Justice to answer the said Complaint, hath not paid the said Sum of Three Pounds eighteen shillings and ten pence nor shewn to me the said Justice any reasonable and sufficient Cause for not so doing: These are therefore to charge and command you the said Constable forthwith to take and convey the said WILLIAM RICHARDS to the House of Correction at Bodmin in the County aforesaid and there deliver him to the Keeper thereof, together with this Precept. And I do hereby also command you the said Keeper of the said House of Correction to receive the said WILLIAM RICHARDS into your Custody in the said House of Correction and him there safely to keep to hard Labour for the Space of three Months, unless he the said WILLIAM RICHARDS shall, before the Expiration of the said three Months, pay or cause to be paid to one of the Overseers of the Poor of the parish of Saint Cleer on whose Behalf the aforesaid Complaint has been made, the said Sum so due and unpaid as aforesaid. Given under my Hand and Seal the Seventeenth Day of May One Thousand Eight Hundred and thirty three
